Editorial Project

The journal Public Communication is a new editorial project in the scientific, academic and professional field of communication. Not just another project that will expand the existing resources in this area, but a space of publication designed with the intention of hosting research, theoretical essays and critical notes that regardless of the diversity of perspectives, languages, contexts and goals characteristic to them, have as a common object the ways of communicating. This is the tradition of the School of Media Studies and the trace of originality that we wish to give to our editorial project.

The choice of title Public Communication takes up this programmatic intent. Whenever we are faced with a complex object, such as “communication”, it becomes necessary to make a set of boundaries that even when they are partial and questionable allow us to delimit and define our own paths and purposes in terms of reflection and theoretical production . Why then the name Public Communication and not the institutionalized form to designate the phenomenon and its common understanding? The notion of "mass communication" is clearly heir to another expression, the mass media, which is precisely one of its greatest weaknesses. In general, and refraining from specific considerations or definitions, the concept of mass media refers to communication processes characterized by large-scale dissemination of messages from a particular sender center to a plurality of receivers based essentially on mechanical and electronic processes. This definition thus appear to exclude interpersonal and small group embedded in public communication strategies, face-to-face processes or instruments that use contact at distance communication processes. Thus the whole area, for example, of public relations, organizational communication and much of corporate communication would be a priori excluded.

Under the heading of "public communication" we can encompass not only more explicitly different contexts of communication - interpersonal, group, organizational, community and social - as different geopolitical arenas - local, regional, national and international. And we can also include the specialized activity of various subsystems that, in a professional and organized manner, divide among themselves the social function of bringing to the most varied audiences all kinds of messages nowadays.

Within this project, any article, regardless of its object and / or methodological approach, should provide a significant contribution to the theoretical interpretation or empirical knowledge and applied communication , understood in its broadest meaning. Naturally , since the so-called " communication sciences " are an area of multifaceted and multidisciplinary nature, Public Communication does not favor any theoretical paradigm or scientific domain, provided that the analysis produced from them can offer a contribution to the development, understanding and the construction of a theory of human communication. Assuming that by its nature this is an area where the delimitation of boundaries between disciplines is often an artificial one , Public Communication gladly welcomes contributions from anthropology , sociology, psychology, economics, philosophy, political science, mathematics and statistics , informatics and cybernetics, linguistics, and neuropsychology neurophilosophy explanation for this phenomenon, widely recognized but hardly known that is human communication . It is also of paramount interest for this publication all work related to organizational communication, marketing communication , journalism , the study of media, public relations, advertising or any area of new technologies audiovisual and multimedia .

The promoters of this project are identified with an educational community that is the School of Media studies at the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon, but they wished from the outset to create a journal open to all who have communication as their work focus.
